A Boy Named Charlie

by Sunjay, Age 9
Once upon a time, when Thanksgiving was first celebrated, there used to be a great feast when Thanksgiving day came. One child named Charlie was especially hungry and really wanted to eat a Thanksgiving dinner.
Everybody gathered around the table, including Charlie, and sat down. Charlie’s mouth was watering at the sight of the turkey and the mashed potatoes. Charlie resisted the tempting urge to gobble up all the food on his plate. Someone yelled “CHEERS,” and everyone bumped their glasses.
A New Record
Charlie gobbled up his food in less than 47.9 seconds. Charlie didn’t know that he had just set a new record for the least time taken to eat a Thanksgiving dinner as an 8-year-old. The record he had beaten was 51.7 seconds.
The next day, he received an award that said: Least time taken to eat a Thanksgiving dinner as an 8-year-old. It was a gold medal that was very, very shiny.
Off to the Olympics
One month later, Charlie was invited to go to the Olympics to try to get a medal for the least time taken to eat a Thanksgiving dinner as a 9-year-old. There were two other contestants, who looked like they could eat a lot, and very fast. The announcer counted down, “3,2,1, GO!”
Once again, Charlie got a shiny gold medal. Ten years later, when Charlie was 19, he was invited to a national contest for the least time taken to eat a Thanksgiving dinner as a 19-year-old. Before the contest, Charlie timed himself and practiced eating the entire Thanksgiving dinner.
The National Contest
Finally, he was ready for the competition. When Charlie arrived at the national contest, the commentator announced that Charlie was the last competitor to come and there were no more contestants. Finally, the announcer counted down, 3,2,1, GO!
Charlie ate the fastest he had ever eaten in his life. But, in the end, he won a gold medal again. But Charlie didn’t stop there. He went on and on to get ten gold medals. Charlie felt like he had accomplished something great in his life, which he did.
Breaking-a-Record Story
Sunjay had a great idea to write a story about breaking a record. Try one yourself. It could be breaking a record for snoring or sneezing the loudest. Give it a try!
