John’s Science Project

This science experiment is on: Strong & Stable Structures. John explains what he enjoyed most about doing the project, and what he found the hardest.
“I enjoyed the planning part most putting this project together, drawing it and then getting the parts. I found the structure hard to put together.” John, Age 9
Strong & Stable Structures – Steps
- Choose your load (an unopened can, for example)
- Use materials from around the house
- Design your structure using vrious shapes; It needs to be 30 cm (or 12 inches tall)
- Put your structure together
- Test it out; It should be both strong and stable
- Finish your structure or start over again
- Test it out again and measure it with a ruler to make sure it is 30 cm tall
Supplies
- pencil and paper
- four cardboard tubes
- glue
- cardboard
- scissors
My Instructions:
- First, I weighed my can to have an idea how strong my structure needed to be to hold the weight.
- Then I drew my design.
- I placed my four cardboard tubes apart.
- Then I cut a piece of cardboard, then I glued it on top of the four paper rolls.
- Next, I cut another piece of cardboard and put it on top of my first piece to make it sturdier.
- Then I made a table.
Do You Know Another Science Project?
After testing out the science experiment for Professor Featherhead, can you think of another one that you could tell B! about? If so, see the submission page here.
