School Lessons

by Aminata, Age 10

“The reason that I submitted this skit is because I really like to read plays that are books because they are fun to read. I always do them after school. I think that it would be very nice to publish it because kids could do it all together. Another reason I contributed is because I really want to start sharing my writing with other people.”

N1 = Narrator 1
N2 = Narrator 2

Scene One: Morning

N1: Our scene starts with a little girl who is starting middle school.

N2: In small town, USA.

Mom: “Sweetie, you’re gonna be late for school!”

Nia: ”Mom, I don’t wanna go!”

Mom: ”Well, you got to go!”

N1: Nia gets ready and goes downstairs.

Dad: ”Ready for your first day of middle school?”

Nia: (with mouth full of food) “Middle school is probably gonna be boring.”

Mom: ”Hurry up and eat your pancakes!”

N2: Nia and her sisters, Allison and Mariah, walk out the door with their dad.

Scene Two: School Time

Allison: (sarcastically) ”Have fun in middle school!”

Nia: (grunts under her breath) ”I don’t think I’m gonna have fun.”

N1: Nia walks over to her friend, Stella.

Nia: “So Stella, are you gonna go to the mathletes team again?”

Stella: ”This year I’m going to try and get my popularity up.”

Stella: ”I’m sorry we’re not friends anymore, you’re really nerdy.”

Nia: (in a sad voice) “Okay.”

Scene 3: Madness

Mr. M: ”So class, I would like everyone to introduce themselves! How about you, Nia?”

Nia: “My name is Nia and I came from Morbes Elementary School.”

Mr. M: ”Anyone else?”

Crowd: ”Nope!”

Mr. M: “Class, I’m gonna pair you up as partners so you guys can get to know each other better!”

Mr. M: “How about, May and Nia together, Dylan and Noah, and the rest will go with me.

N2: “May starts walking over to Nia’s seat.”

Nia: (groans)

Nia: “There’s not a lot to talk about, we already know each other.”

Mr. M: “These will be your math partners for the rest of the year.”

May: “Can I switch?”

Mr. M: “I am going to ask you questions. The one with the least answered has to scrape the gum off the table!”

Mr. M: ”How about May and Nia! What is 7 x 8?”

Nia: ”43!”

May: ”56!”

Mr. M: ”May is correct! One point for May and Nia’s team!”

N1: (30 minutes later)

Mr. M: “The team with the least is May and Nia!”

May and Nia: “This is all your fault!”

N2: “The girls walk off both steaming with anger.”

Scene 4: Life Lessons

N1: “May cooled off and accepted fate, but Nia was still mad—so mad that she bullied May every single day.”

Nia: “Or what, are you gonna get your mommy?”

Nia: ”Hey, are you gonna take that magazine with you everywhere you go? You should read BAZOOF™  instead, it’s for the cool kids.”

May: (whispers) “Could you please stop being so mean!”

May: ”Here’s a goodybag with an invitation to my birthday party. Even though you bully me, I still think that we can be friends!”

Nia: ”Thanks.”

N1: “Nia instantly regrets everything that she did to May. May was trying so hard to be friends but Nia was ignorant towards her.”

N2: “The story ends with Nia and May becoming best friends.”

N1 & N2: “Treat People The Way You Wanna Be Treated.” THE END
